H & W Harkess funeral Directors originated as a family run business at the Pleasance which is on the south side of Edinburgh. Two brothers, named Harry and William ran the business and operated stables which were attached to the side of the premises. They stabled four black horses at these premises and after expanding the business, moved to our current location at 77 South Clerk Street. The premises at the time were occupied by a bank. The premises is on ground level with a basement which was then occupied as a vault by the bank. The family run business was taken over by the House of Fraser in the 90's which incorporated John Croall & Sons, Funeral Directors. The business was then taken over by Glenhaven Funeral Services which is part of the Co-operative Group. H & W Harkess have and still are a well known community Funeral Director on the South side of Edinburgh, based on the corner of Newington Road & South Clerk Street. The business has been well known by families from the surrounding Area and nicknamed "Harkess Corner".
As part of a continued development and to service families further afield from surrounding areas, H & W Harkess opened additional branch at 12 Drum Street, Gilmerton. The funeral branch was opened on 4th February 1999 and has been serving the community of Gilmerton and surrounding area since. The premises were previously occupied as a butcher shop and is still know to locals as "The Old Gilmerton Willage". The row of shops where this located is built on top Gilmerton Coves.
